Strelitzia Reginae ( Bird-of-Paradise-flower)

Strelitzia is a member of the Musaceae(banana) family. This magnificent plant with its exotic flowers are originated in South Africa. Here it grows on the edge of the tropical rain forests. This locations can be very wet sometimes and then suffer long periods of drought . The plant and its roots are adapted to this habitat.

Strelitzia grows slowly and first flowering is after several years.

In nature the bird-of-paradise-flower is pollinated by birds. Pollinated flowers have jet black seeds with an orange tuft.

Care:

  • Keep in bright light.
  • Temperature 5 to 20 degree Celsius.
  • Water regularly.
  • Feed occasionally.
  • Can be kept on the patio during summer.
